AI Workshop on Responsible Use for Real Work Products

This full-day, in-person workshop helps public servants gain hands-on experience using generative AI—like Microsoft Copilot—to create real work products responsibly. Learn how to direct, review, and refine AI outputs while upholding the standards of judgment, accountability, and professionalism expected in government.

Description

Generative AI is becoming part of everyday work in the public service, but many public servants are uncertain how to use these tools effectively and responsibly given the risks, policies, and professional standards involved.

This full-day workshop is designed to address that challenge.

Participants will learn how to use generative AI tools, with a particular focus on Microsoft
Copilot, to support their work while exercising sound judgment and accountability. The emphasis is on responsible use: understanding when AI can help, when it requires close human oversight, and when it should not be used at all.

Participants will learn how to give clear direction, provide context, critically review outputs, and apply their own expertise, much as they would when delegating work to a junior team member.

The session is focused on applying generative AI to a real issue drawn from participants’ own work, including research, writing briefing notes, preparing PowerPoint presentations, and developing speaking points for oral briefings or team meetings.

By the end of the day, participants will have practical skills, real work products and a clear decision framework to help them use AI confidently and responsibly in their public-service roles.

You will learn:

  • How to use generative AI responsibly in a public-sector context, balancing efficiency with accountability, risk awareness, and professional standards.
  • When and when not to use AI by applying a practical decision framework that helps assess task suitability, risk, and required human oversight.
  • How to work effectively with tools like Microsoft Copilot to support real work tasks such as research, briefing notes, presentations, and speaking points.
  • How to give clear direction and context to AI tools, similar to delegating work to a junior team member.
  • How to critically review, refine, and validate AI-generated outputs using your own expertise and professional judgment.
  • How to turn AI support into real work products that are accurate, defensible, and ready for use in your day-to-day role.
